Boys Don’t Cry

Omg! I was just watching the first episode of How I Met Your Mother (HIMYM) Season 2, and the song playing at the end of the episode intrigued me. It was a guy accompanied by an acoustic guitar, and one line in particular caught my attention, “Boys don’t cry.”

So of course I go to iTunes and look up that line, and get a long list of songs, but the most popular ones was “Boys Don’t Cry” by the Cure.

Being the smart shopper that I am, I double clicked the song title to preview it. It definitely wasn’t the same version as the song that was playing on the HIMYM episode, but that really wasn’t on my mind at the time.

The first thing that popped into my mind when I heard the song preview was, “I’m sure I’ve heard this before.” The second thought was “I’ve definitely heard this before…” And the third thought was “OMFG, I loved this song in 1999!”

See when I was a little kid in Year 7, my class went on this field trip to some dam where this fancy power station was located, and the trip from my boarding school to the city where the dam was located took about four or five hours. Since I was a wee lad of thirteen, I didn’t have the attention span that I do now so the trip basically consisted of listening to my Walkman, reading or playing on my phone.

I remember there was this one particular hour where I was dialing random numbers. Not all of them worked, but after dialing a particular number I heard music coming out of my phone, it was a guitar playing, and a man singing “Boys don’t cry.” The tune was pretty catchy and I kept dialing that number to hear that little bit of song over and over again.

I called that number so many times that I ran out of battery by the time we got to the place we were staying that night.

When my family and I went to the Philippines last December, I tried calling that number again, but sadly, it wasn’t working anymore.

For some reason I never tried to find out the name of the song back then, but hearing it today was like being bashed by the nostalgia stick multiple times, causing fractures and internal bleeding.

Ok, that simile was a little disturbing, but the memories that hit me after hearing the chorus was awesome. I basically just on my chair laughing at stuff that happened to me ages ago.

This basically ends my rave about the song, and probably confirms any suspicion that I am crazy. Buy the song on iTunes by clicking here, or watch the video on Youtube.
