Ikea madness
I have been sucked into the madness that is Ikea.
It’s nothing to be ashamed of, millions of other people have succumbed to the call of the giant store that sells furniture packaged in little boxes that the naive customer can assemble himself.
Things weren’t always like this.
I used to think that stuff from Ikea was plain, uninteresting and industrial, totally unsuited for the rooms that I lived in. Unfortunately for me, Ikea wasn’t exactly disinterested in me.
It went about pulling me in slowly, so slowly I didn’t even recognize what was happening. At first it was the casual one page ad in a magazine or newspaper. Next came a friend who happened to buy something from Ikea and couldn’t stop raving about it. (The lamp did look pretty cool though.)
The final stage of its three part plan to get me inside its doors came in the form of an article in Reader’s Digest, written by a man who had fallen victim to the giant that is Ikea. Reading about how the furniture from that store tortured the poor man was horrifying, but even after what he went through, he still loved the store.
And here I am now, bored and at work, clicking through the online catalogue, and finding that I actually like the stuff on the website. I think it can be said without any doubt that I’ll be inside an Ikea store before the week is out, no question about it.
The only thing that’s bothering me is knowing that putting that furniture together is going to be a bitch.
